water water everywhere not a drop to drink….. (The Crazy Brit investigates)
People keep saying that in the not too distant future wars are likely to be fought not over oil, but water. In fact this has been going on for centuries. Evidence clearly shows that water is already a precious commodity and you only need to play around on Google to get the facts. As water is undoubtedly (one) of the few material things we need to survive I thought I’d dig around to find out more, what I found not only surprised me but made me a little concerned. You can read through this whole post if you like or just scoot to the end and read my finding. But you really should judge for yourself…and please leave any comments good or bad, that’s how we learn.
We all know some of the issues with tap water so I won’t waste time on that, now bottled water is being questioned and this is probably regarded by most people as the ‘safest’ source of water, safe maybe, but beneficial to health, questionable.
So I thought I’d look at two particular contenders for the best water source first. Ionized water
What is Ionized Water?
Ionized water is water with mineral ions in it. Minerals in water become ionized when they either gain or lose electrons. All water found in nature has minerals in it.
Ionized water has minerals in it. All water found in nature is ionized to some extent.
Deionized water has no minerals in it. It is made by distilling water or through reverse osmosis.
Water with no minerals in it is not natural water, all natural water has minerals in it.
Two Kinds of Ionized Water
Ionized alkaline water is also known as Electrolyzed Reduced Water because it has been shown in laboratory settings to reduce the effects of oxidation. The ability of ionized alkaline water to reduce oxidative damage is referred to as its Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP).
Oxidation – Happens when an acidic substance steals electrons from a substance. Oxidation will damage or destroy a substance; it causes cut apples to turn brown, and metal to rust. Acidic water oxidizes things – including body tissues and DNA, by stealing electrons from them. Doctors recommend antioxidant foods to stop the damage caused by oxidation.
Reduction – Happens when an antioxidant substance gives electrons to a substance such as free radicals that attack body tissues and DNA. The antioxidant reduces the free radicals ability to oxidize tissues and DNA. Medical science suggests this process help keep you healthy.
Ionized alkaline water is known by scientists as Electrolyzed Reduced Water, because it reduces oxidation. ERW has extra electrons which can reduce the ability of harmful substances to oxidize things like tissues and DNA. Research into the health benefits of the reduction caused by ERW is ongoing.
Ionized acidic water is known by scientists as Electrolyzed Oxidative Water (EOW) because it increases oxidation. Its ability to increase oxidation gives EOW the ability to sanitize surfaces, tools, kitchen implements and more. When it’s made with salt, EOW becomes a powerful disinfectant that replaces many toxic household cleaners.
How is Ionized Water Made?
Tap water is a mixture of two kinds of ions: Mineral ions, such as calcium, magnesium and potassium, and bicarbonate ions. Those mineral ions have a positive electromagnetic charge. Bicarbonate is dissolved CO2, it’s formed when CO2 is absorbed by water from the air. Bicarbonate has a negative electromagnetic charge.
Home water ionizers use electromagnetism to separate the positively charged minerals from the negatively charged bicarbonate. Water ionizers have charged plates, which act just like magnets, they attract the ions that have the opposite charge they do. When that happens, the ions pass through a membrane called a Bipolar Exchange Membrane. The membrane allows ions to pass through it, but it doesn’t allow other types of particles to cross.
The ion separation process makes both alkaline and acidic waters at the same time because the membrane separates the minerals from the bicarbonate. That makes the water inside the alkaline chamber into alkaline water, and the water inside the acidic chamber into acidic water.
In-Vitro Study on ionized water shows it can reduce oxidative damage to DNA strands.
The study, called Electrolyzed–Reduced Water Scavenges Active Oxygen Species and Protects DNA from Oxidative Damage examined ionized alkaline water’s ability to stop oxidative damage done to our DNA by harmful oxidants like free radicals. Oxidation by free radicals has been linked to premature aging and degenerative disease.

The study was done In-Vitro which means: In glass, such as a test tube. In vitro experiments are done in glass or plastic vessels in a laboratory. The study showed that Electrolyzed Reduced Water (ionized alkaline water) made by a water ionizer prevented DNA from being oxidized by free radicals. Research on the antioxidant properties of alkaline water is ongoing. If successful, it would result in antioxidant water being used to protect DNA from the oxidative damage that is associated with premature aging and degenerative disease.
Does ionized water have health benefits?
There are many studies like the one above that suggest that drinking ionized alkaline water does have health benefits. Could it help improve your health? Everyone’s body is different, the best way to find out if alkaline water may help in your case is to do further research. There are over 40 studies on the health benefits of drinking alkaline water just Google and you can read them all. You can also look for suppliers of domestically fitted machines I just did and was quite surprised with what I found as you will see at the end of this ‘source of information’.
Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification technology that uses a semipermeable membrane to remove ions, molecules, and larger particles from drinking water. In reverse osmosis, an applied pressure is used to overcome osmotic pressure, a colligative property that is driven by chemical potential differences of the solvent, a thermodynamic parameter. Reverse osmosis can remove many types of dissolved and suspended species from water, including bacteria, and is used in both industrial processes and the production of potable water. The result is that the solute is retained on the pressurized side of the membrane and the pure solvent is allowed to pass to the other side. To be “selective”, this membrane should not allow large molecules or ions through the pores (holes), but should allow smaller components of the solution (such as solvent molecules) to pass freely.
In the normal osmosis process, the solvent naturally moves from an area of low solute concentration (high water potential), through a membrane, to an area of high solute concentration (low water potential). The driving force for the movement of the solvent is the reduction in the free energy of the system when the difference in solvent concentration on either side of a membrane is reduced, generating osmotic pressure due to the solvent moving into the more concentrated solution. Applying an external pressure to reverse the natural flow of pure solvent, thus, is reverse osmosis. The process is similar to other membrane technology applications. However, key differences are found between reverse osmosis and filtration. The predominant removal mechanism in membrane filtration is straining, or size exclusion, so the process can theoretically achieve perfect efficiency regardless of parameters such as the solution’s pressure and concentration. Reverse osmosis also involves diffusion, making the process dependent on pressure, flow rate, and other conditions. Reverse osmosis is most commonly known for its use in drinking water purification from seawater, removing the salt and other effluent materials from the water molecules.
Now here’s the kicker. In my opinion after reading ALL of the evidence Ionized is the best and safest route. Ironically I installed a Reverse Osmosis system in my tea shop to ensure I gave my customers what I was told to be the best. It cost me around €300 fitted. However, when I moved into my house it already had what I thought was an older version of RO but after my research I’ve found it’s a home ionizer system. Well knock me down with a feather.
I like to investigate everything I get involved in as anyone who’s read my blog will know http://www.crazybritblog.com. I make very little money from blogging, but this time I’ve saved not only money but maybe my health…hmmm we shall see.
OK so here’s the thing I cut and pasted most of what you’ve read here my source was good old wilkipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_osmosis and this company:- http://www.lifeionizers.com/water-facts/ionized-water.html
If you ask nicely they will let you download a free book ENJOY.
